Seoul Yeongdeungpo District: MacArthur Commander Han River Defense Line Inspection Site

General MacArthur’s inspection of the Han River Defense Line, a site visited on June 29, 1950, saw him directly surveying the area near Yeouido Park in Seoul, with President Rhee Syng-man and General Choi Byung-deok, Chief of Staff of the Army, in attendance for a war briefing. Accompanied by Kim Jong-gap, head of the Operation Department of the Siheung District Battle Headquarters, MacArthur personally observed the frontline situation near Singil-dong where the Han River front was visible. During this visit, MacArthur asked a soldier guarding the south side of the Han River, “How long do you think you can hold this place?” The soldier replied, “I will defend it until the order to withdraw is given.” Touched by this resolute answer, MacArthur’s on-site inspection greatly boosted the morale of the Korean troops and helped in formulating key ideas for the Incheon Landing Operation. He visited the Korean front line over 10 times before being relieved of duty in April 1951. The inspection site is estimated to be along the road in front of Yeouido Park, with a memorial facility sign installed near the fountain area within the park. The location is approximately 450m away from Exit 1 of Yeouinaru Station on Seoul Subway Line 1.
