Seoul Geumcheon District ‘Hoamsanseong’
Located on Mt. Gwanak, the ancient fortress dating back to the Silla period offers a glimpse into Korea’s rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore cultural relics such as Hanwumul and stone sculptures, as well as enjoy hiking along the Gwanak Mountain trail, which includes a visit to the traditional temple Hoaksasa. The Gwanaksanseong fortress, built during the Unified Silla period, surrounds a mountain ridge with a perimeter of 1,250m, with remnants of the fortress visible along a 300m section. Hanwumul, a 22m long, 12m wide pond at the summit, is surrounded by granite and is also known as Yongbo, the Dragon Pond. It is said to have served as a water source during droughts and for military purposes during wartime. While the exact origins of the pond remain unknown, excavations have revealed that an ancient pond from the Three Kingdoms period lay buried beneath the current pond, with a newer pond constructed during the early Joseon period. Nearby, a stone inscription reading “Still cutting inside power not yet” was found, along with a dog-shaped stone statue believed to be related to a legend about preventing fires in Seoul during the Joseon period. Additionally, a stone engraved with the name “Seokguji” was discovered near Hanwumul, likely associated with the stone statue, suggesting a connection between the two.
