Seoul Guro-gu ‘Gochek-dong Dolmen’

고척동 고인돌

This is a Bronze Age tomb located in Guro-gu, Gochuk-dong. It is situated within the ancient earthen fort of Sinjeong-ri, dating back to the Three Kingdoms period, behind Gochuk High School. The dolmen was first discovered in 1998 by a team from Seoul National University, and subsequent investigations by experts in related fields suggested that it might have been moved from its original location, as no similar stones were found nearby. Though not large in scale, a stone chamber has been identified, and based on the arrangement of capstones and supporting stones, it is presumed to be a dolmen. The Gochuk-dong dolmen is the only one of its kind in Guro-gu and serves as valuable evidence for understanding the cultural landscape of the surrounding area during the Bronze Age, along with other artifacts found in the Gochuk-dong archaeological site. As it is located along the Guro Olle Trail, it’s a great idea for foreign tourists to take a leisurely stroll and explore the site.

Seoul Guro District ‘Ryu Soon-Jeong and Ryu Hong Wealthy Ancestral Graveyard’

류순정·류홍 부자 묘역

“This tomb was built in memory of Ryu Soon-jeong, a loyal subject, who passed away at the age of 53 in the year 1512 (7th year of King Jungjong’s reign). King Jungjong bestowed approximately 3 million square meters of land in present-day Guro-gu, Oryu-dong, Onsu-dong, as well as in Yeoul-dong and Jak-dong in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, to establish this tomb. Located about 80 meters southwest of Ryu Soon-jeong’s tomb is the tomb of his son, Ryu Hong, who was also recognized as a fourth-rank loyal subject. Nearby, there are five tombs of descendants who were honored in other locations. The tombs of Ryu Soon-jeong and Ryu Hong are the only father-son loyal subject tombs in the Seoul area, dating back to the early 16th century. Particularly noteworthy is the tomb of Ryu Soon-jeong, the highest-ranked loyal subject of the Jungjong period, which was constructed with national attention to the extent of acquiring the Jangheunggo’s official residence that was previously reserved only for the royal family, providing valuable insights into the construction of loyal subject tombs. This tomb is located approximately a 20-minute walk from Exit 3 of Cheonwangryeok Station on Seoul Metro Line 7.”
