Experience the Jukdo Tidal Flats

In Namhae’s Jukdo Village, you can participate in a mudflat experience program where you can encounter various mudflat creatures. The experience includes catching snails and clams. When you join the program, the village provides boots and tools for the experience. The highlight is catching snails. Snails, known as ‘ssok’ in Korean, are small crustaceans measuring about 10cm long found in the South and West Sea. To catch a snail, you gently touch the snail with miso water in a hole in the mudflat, and when the snail grabs the brush with its pincers, quickly grab it without missing the moment. You can even fry the snail you caught on the spot at the experience center on the first floor for a crispy and savory taste. Jukdo Village’s pride, Jukbangnyeom, and the nearby German Village are great places to explore together.

Namhae Daegyo
Following Jeju Island, Geoje Island, and Jindo, Namhae Island is the fourth largest island in South Korea and home to the gateway known as Namhae Bridge. Back then, Namhae Bridge was referred to as the largest cable-stayed bridge in the East. With a length of 660m and a height of 80m, this beautiful bridge opened in 1973, capturing the excitement and anticipation of the people, including a spectacular opening ceremony attended by around 100,000 individuals, where even President Park Chung-hee crossed the bridge himself.
Considered the most beautiful bridge in Korea, walking across the red Namhae Bridge was seen as a symbol of good luck in the past, making it a popular destination for school trips and honeymoons. The strong currents of the sea that Namhae Bridge spans serve as a witness to Namhae’s history and a symbol of its past. Before the bridge was built, the people of Namhae had to cross the rough waters of Noryang on small boats or ferries. On the other side of Namhae Bridge, there is a rest area called Namhae Pavilion, where you can enjoy a view of the bridge. Surrounding the pavilion, you can find a tunnel of cherry blossoms in full bloom. Nearby attractions include Chungryeolsa Temple and Cheonhwa Monument in Namhae.

Changseon Bridge

The Jijok Strait starts to move vigorously twice a day, crossing the 12 o’clock mark day and night. It is said that when the high and low tides intersect, the water current that rushes out of the narrow sea area is so strong that it is difficult to resist. Changseon Bridge crosses the Jijok Strait, connecting Jijok-ri in Changseon-myeon and Jijok-ri in Samdong-myeon. With a length of 438m and a width of 14.5m, it was opened on December 20, 1995. Originally completed on June 5, 1980, Changseon Bridge collapsed in 1992 and was rebuilt.
The bridge not only facilitates transportation but also offers a place to appreciate the beauty of traditional fishing using a primitive method of ‘Jukbangnyeom’ and the sunset underneath. Preserved as a living folk cultural heritage, ‘Jukbangnyeom’ involves spreading a net made of chestnut wood on a frame resembling a fishing weir, arranged in a V-shape towards the direction of the flowing current to catch fish. This simple method, with only 23 remaining in the Jijok Strait in Namhae County, is a valuable tourist attraction worth exploring.

Chokhwabi

Cheokhwabi is a type of monument built by Prince Heungseon Daewongun to commemorate the victories of the Byeonginyangyo and Shinmiyangyo battles, as well as to warn the Korean people against Western invasion. This particular monument is different from others, as it stands on a low square base stone with a roof stone placed on top. It was erected in various locations in Seoul and throughout the country under the command of Prince Heungseon Daewongun. While many monuments were dismantled during the global exchanges following the prince’s abduction by the Russian legation, a few, like this one, remain, preserving their historical significance and telling stories of the past.
